Chalk Paint-is it in or is it out?

It seemed like for a while everyone was painting a wall or walls in their house with chalk paint- whether it was a play room wall or a wall in their kitchen. It’s a great idea and can be really cute- but honestly- unless you’re a chalk artist, what are you really writing on it? Your kids are probably just scribbling on the wall- which might not be the best habit you want them to get in to. My biggest concern with a whole wall as a chalk board is how do you ever get it clean again? Do you wash the whole thing just to get it clean? I don’t know about you but washing walls isn’t something I prefer to do that often. Not only that but when you want to paint over it- it’s black paint. That seems impossible to cover.

If you have a chalk wall and you love it- or your kids love it- or your hubby loves writing you love notes on it- that’s great (an you’ve snagged yourself a good hubby)! This is just my opinion and in no way does it mean it’s right. I prefer a chalk board that can be hung, or moved, easily erased. Craft stores sell the cutest chalk boards or memo boards now- and guess what- the love in your life can still leave you sweet notes on it, or maybe just remind you that there is no more milk.

There is another kind of chalk paint that has also become increasingly popular. Certain brands can also be found at the craft store, or hardware store. Even Joanna Gaines has a chalk paint line. If you’ve never used chalk paint, you’re truly missing out. IT IS SO EASY! Any level DIY’er can do it. You simply can paint ANYTHING with it. There is virtually no prep work associated with it (you may need some light sanding if your piece of furniture has a lot of polyurethane). It is sold in multiple colors and to seal it- you use the top coat. It dries super fast, it goes on easy, it distresses easily and it looks great! It almost sounds too good to be true- it’s not! I promise you it is as easy as that! I have used chalk paint myself, and I have bought furniture that has been refinished in chalk paint- neither pieces disappoint. Here is an article for beginners on how to use chalk paint: Marty Musings . This article breaks down the types of chalk paint and the steps needed to complete a project. It really doesn’t get any easier than that, I promise!

  1. Sooo many projects I have wanted to do this to and hesitated thinking it’s not as easy as they claim so thank you for easing my mind that even I can use chalk paint and have success.
