Interior Decorator vs. Designer

Let’s talk about just what it is I do..and don’t do for that matter. When you think of an interior decorator, the obvious comes to mind- someone who will decorate the interior of my home. While that is 99% true- there is so much more to it than just decorating. But what exactly is the difference between decorating and designing? There is one, although there is a lot of overlap.

First of all- Interior design is a passion among many, but if you are going to hire a professional they should be Certified in Interior Design. This holds true if you are especially looking to redesign elements of your home. The difference between decorating and designing is that when you design- you may actually be changing the structure or moving fixtures in a room. For example, if you are decorating your bathroom we are going to shop (yes, this is what I do with you) for everything from the shower curtain and rod, tile, hand towels, soap dispensers and even the t.p. holder. If you are re-designing your bathroom, you might be moving the toilet or the window in the room, maybe taking out the tub, or adding a double sink. For this type of project you need a General Contractor, plumbers, PERMITS! This is much more expansive than what I am Certified to do. HOWEVER- the bonus here is that Emily’s Interiors also has a design build firm we work with called RemodelWerks, LLC. They have every professional needed under the sun to take a design project from start to finish. So while I will be there every step of the way to help you pick out the tile for the new shower you are having installed or the top for the new vanity being built- I won’t physically be taking a hammer to any walls.

The beauty in being Certified in Interior Design is that I also will be designing the bathroom and presenting the design to you. If you are remodeling a room (or maybe the whole house) I am helping to design that space based on your wants and needs. The best part is that I also am helping you to decorate it! So while there is overlap in design and decorating- there is also a major difference. If you are a DIY’er and are just looking for guidance on colors, cabinet styles, fixtures- this is all decorating!

Part of the passion in Interior Design is how versatile it is- the options are endless on what we can do (unless the engineer tells us no HA!). I can help you take any space in your home from the studs in the wall (we may be hiring additional professionals) to adding the final finishing touches to a room. The dividing factor is how much or how little “design” will be involved in that transformation!
