Gallery Wall: How to

Do you have too many pictures and too little wall space? I feel like wall art has come such a long way and there are so many cute signs and gorgeous canvas prints now that I find myself wanting them all (shocking right?). You can have your cake and eat it too. I recently made a wall in my living room a gallery wall and instantly fell in love with how I was able to incorporate so many different pieces, yet somehow they all looked like they belong together. There are a few ways to create a gallery wall and I’m going to help you through every step of the way!

A gallery wall can really be anywhere: behind the couch, sofa table, entryway bench or table, above a headboard, up the stairs. Maybe you have a room with a theme, or your wedding photos you want to display but there are so many you love- hanging them together organizes them (like those trays I told you about). It’s really to help fill a large space without overwhelming it.

So maybe the idea of putting 12 holes in your wall, freaks you or your husband out! You don’t have to go hanging right away and then moving the picture when it’s just not right where you wanted it. Start by taking some newspaper or craft paper, or better yet, if you have the frames you want to hang take that handy piece of cardboard out of the back of them. Clear a space on the floor , preferably near the wall you are planning to use and then begin your lay out. If you are using newspaper or craft paper you are going to want to cut the paper to the size of the pieces you will be hanging. Another great alternative is to use blue painters tape and actually tape out the sizes of the pieces to the wall. You’ll get a great visual this way! This will help you also decide on spacing and arrangement. Below are some ideas on layouts.

Now, you don’t have to follow any of these pre steps. I just started hanging and continued filling until I was satisfied with what the result was. If you are looking for a more eclectic look you will want to make sure you are mixing sizes and textures. Overlap, space some pieces closer together than others- the world is your oyster! It’s your wall after all! But if you are looking for a more organized, clean look- measuring tape will be your best friend! Also, not everything you hang has to be a picture or art and not everything has to be square or rectangular either. Check out these alternatives to help mix it up.

Pinterest is loaded with gallery wall ideas and now that you have some basic tips on how to begin, you can start hanging or taping and feel confident in what you are doing! As always, I’m here to help if you feel overwhelmed or lost! We can hang together! 😉

  1. I love your ideas Lexi!!!! I like the idea of different kinds of frames with other decorations. You have an eye for this! Thanks for sharing!!! I look forward to your posts!

  2. Wow! Never thought of using the cardboard from each frame to lay it out, so clever. Can’t wait for you to do the walls in the new house😉
